More than 30 form 7 students at the Vava’u High School participated in a promotional lecture led jointly by the Department of Energy and the PCREEE on 18th July 2019 to raise the students’ awareness and interest on pursuing further studies and job and business opportunities on sustainable energy. The lecture has a theory and practical component as well as a competition component to test the students’ understanding and effectiveness of the lecture.


New Zealand company Infratec has completed a $US10.8 million Asian Development Bank project to deliver reliable renewable energy to four islands in the southern Cook Islands.

Over the past two years Infratec has designed and delivered solar mini grids and new underground network distribution systems on Atiu, Mangaia, Mauke and Mitiaro.

10th July 2019 His Majesty King Tupou VI commissioned Tonga’s first large-scale wind farm project the Ii ‘o Manumataongo wind generation system this morning at Niutoua Village.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga H.E. Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, said the project is approximately 42 million Tongan pa’anga and it took 10 months to complete. The 1.3 MW Wind Power System will be the first ever Wind Power Project of Japan’s Grant Aids in the World.
