The Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE), Tonga Power Limited, Department of Energy under the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), and the Electricity Commission hosted a one-day stakeholder seminar in Nuku’alofa today.

The seminar was to inform stakeholders and development partners on Tonga’s progress towards meeting renewable energy targets.


An initiative to establish a capacity building programme for young professionals from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), has been launched by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).


More than 40 participants representing government departments, private sector and other relevant organisations are taking part in a workshop to discuss the Tonga Energy Efficiency Master Plan in Nuku’alofa this week.

Organised by the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECCC) and the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE), the workshop is an opportunity for stakeholders to have input into the plan before it goes to cabinet for approval.


The Government of Vanuatu has signed the contract for the construction of the Brenwe Hydro plant under the Vanuatu Energy Access Project (VEAP) with the New Zealand joint venture, MAPs/Vortex. 

Following the signing – conducted on Tuesday 21st of January, hours before the Vanuatu parliament was dissolved, the company promised to deliver the project within schedule.


Construction now set to begin on Tina River Hydropower Project in early 2020

HONIARA, December 16, 2019 — The Government of Solomon Islands and the International Finance Corporation, IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, today announced the formal completion of a landmark financing agreement for the Tina River Hydropower Project, which will see Solomon Islands move from virtual total reliance on imported diesel to majority renewable energy that will significantly cut power costs and emissions.
