Nuku’alofa, 11th June 2020. Ensuring that electricity regulators effectively carry out their responsibilities according to Law would be beneficial to the power utilities, the investors and the consumers alike. It would also be beneficial to the entire economy because everyone’s life, whether it be food, medicine and water supply, is assisted by electricity.


Tonga has set, amongst other targets, an ambitious target to generate 50% of the country’s electricity from renewable energy resources by 2020.  Several initiatives are currently taking place in Tonga in pursuit of these targets.


29th May, 2020 Australia has contributed a further AUD 2.9m for new renewable energy infrastructure in Tonga.

This new funding through the Outer Islands Renewable Energy Project (OIREP) will ensure that Vava’u will have 100% coverage from a safe, reliable, and climate resilient electricity network. It brings Australia’s total funding for OIREP to AUD 9.5million since 2013.


TC Harold hit Tonga on 9th April with estimated damages of about USD 111 million, coming largely from the tourism sector. As of now, Tonga remains free of the COVID 19 and is continuing to finalise its preparations including familiarising with the use of life saving equipments.
