Asia and the Pacific has made great strides in poverty reduction and economic growth in the past 50 years. ADB has been a key partner in the significant transformation of the region and is committed to continue serving the region in the next phase of its development.

Under Strategy 2030, ADB will expand its vision to achieve a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty.

This review of Renewable Energy Island (REIs) is an attempt to give an overview of initiatives within renewable energy on islands around the world.

The report highlights that renewables are increasingly becoming the most competitive option for new grid supply and swift grid extension. Where electricity systems are dominated by oil‑fired plant, cheaper—sometimes significantly cheaper—renewable generation choices are available. For off‑grid power supply, renewables are already the default economic solution.

This volume is a joint publication of the staff of the international Bank of reconstruction and Development/The World Bank and the Australian Agency for international Development (AusAid). 

The report captures the current efforts of the Asian Development Bank to promote sustainable infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific. We stand ready to work with our partners to find
appropriate solutions to their infrastructure investment needs, and to link them to the expertise and finance they need to address the many challenges ahead.

UNDP funded project. The development goal of the proposed project is the reduction of the growth rate of GHG emissions from fossil fuel using activities, particularly diesel power generation through the removal of the major barriers to the development and application of renewable energy-based systems that can supplant part of the fossil fuel use in the Maldives.

A grid-connected PV-diesel hybrid system has been designed and installed at one of the Outer Islands of the Maldives, as part of the SMILES project. Matching of demand and supply was thoroughly examined using the HOMER optimization programme. Data on daily load and efficiency of present diesel generators were collected as well as data on solar irradiation.
