On the occasion of the General Debate at the Seventy-second Session of the United Nations General Assembly, His Majesty King Tupou VI stressed that "enhanced accessibility to modem and clean sustainable energy services, energy efficiency, and the use of economically viable and environmentally sound technology and research, play a critical role in our sustainable development. Mitigation efforts are also essential to overcome the challenges of excess dependence on imported fossil fuels.


05 September 2017 – The Korea Energy Agency (KEA) has agreed to support the newly established Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) in the development of a regional renewable energy mini-grid programme for the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs).


The Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC) has commenced operations in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.


The Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) was inaugurated on 26 April 2017 in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, at the margins of the Third Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting. It took place in conjunction with the 70th Anniversary celebration of the Pacific Community (SPC). It featured interventions of the Director-General of the Pacific Community, the UNIDO Regional Representative, several Prime Ministers of the Pacific Islands and Territories (PICTs) and the Managing Director of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
