The Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), Mr. Paula Pouvalu Ma’u opened a three-day workshop on Refrigeration and Air Condition (RAC) Technicians on Good Serving Practices for Longer-Term, Low-GWP Alternatives in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Sector, this morning at Tonga Institute of Science and Technology.


The Pacific Environment Community Fund Project (PEC Fund) under the Department of Energy - MEIDECC, is currently installing solar water pumps and solar freezers in Ha’apai and Vava’u.

Aimed to boost socio- economic and livelihood of rural and remote communities on an environmentally sound manner, the work is scheduled to be officially commissioned on December 6, 2017.


In a symbolic move to showcase the island nation’s ambitious goals, Tonga announced the installation of solar panels for the Royal Palace as part of the Solar Head of State program.

The installation will be the first of its kind in the Pacific as a national leader takes the personal step to use solar power for their official residence.

The leader of the Tongan delegation, Paula Ma’u (CEO of MEIDECC), signed an agreement at the event to work with Solar Head of State and the PIDF to carry out the installation.

Fiji's Government raised $40 million when issuing its first Green Bonds on the 1st November, 2017. Fiji become the first emerging market to issue a sovereign green bond, to support climate change mitigation and adaption.The proceeds of the Green Bonds will specifically fund climate resilience projects.Transportation will be a focus area plus other projects as well funded by this green bond.

Government of Samoa and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) officially launched a multi-million dollar project (dubbed “IMPRESS” - “Improving the Performance and Reliability of Renewable Energy Power System in Samoa”) to enhance sustainable and cost-effective energy production in the Small Island Developing State. The project is set to support the country's efforts towards achieving 100% renewable energy electricity generation by 2025, while also contributing to improved energy for everyday Samoans.
