In September 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit,world leaders agreed to a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets for combating poverty, hunger, illiteracy, gender inequality, disease, and environmental degradation.The eight goals that were eventually agreed upon are what the development community now refers to as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Increasing the Participation of Women Entrepreneurs in the Solomon Islands Aid Economy

The World Bank undertook this study to explore the scope for, and potential impacts of, increasing the local economic impact of aid through increased local spending by donors. More specifically, this study examines the potential for increasing participation of Solomon Islands women entrepreneurs in relation to local aid-economy opportunities. The research is framed around four key questions:

1. What are the key characteristics of the Solomon Islands aid economy?

2. Why increase the participation of women entrepreneurs in the Solomon Islands aid economy?

Technology Transfer issues in Environmental Goods and services: An illustrative Analysis of sectors Relevant to Air-pollution and Renewable Energy

This paper argues, on the basis of empirical evidence and the conceptual evolution over the years of what constitutes technology transfer, that much can be done within Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) and other areas of World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations. This would, however, imply rethinking the mandate of EGS negotiations and steering the focus away from simply increasing market access for EGS to one that recognises and facilitates the importance of knowledge transfers including “tacit” knowledge embodied in services.

Replacing Fuel Based Lighting with Light Emitting Diodes in Developing Countries: Energy and Lighting in Rural Nepali Homes

More than one quarter of the world’s population, who does not have access to electric light, live in the developing countries. Nepal is one of these countries, where the people in the remote rural areas have to rely on fuel based lighting to bring minimal lighting services in their homes.

Sustainable energy policy: Report on an advisory Mission to the Pacific Islands

In July 2001, ESCAP advised island governments and PROs, that ESCAP intended to send a mission to the Pacific Region and would entertain requests for specific technical assistance related to sustainable energy development. Requests for assistance were received from six countries, Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Kiribati. The request from Vanuatu was for a technical consultancy on geothermal energy and will be fulfilled separately by a consultant contracted by ESCAP.

Guide on gender mainstreaming: Energy and Climate change Projects

This Guide is part of an organization-wide initiative to mainstream gender into all of UNIDO’s technical cooperation projects and programmes. Karen Cadondon, Eliana Gutiérrez-Amo and Liv Pelt Steensig are the main authors of the document.

 This Gold Standard Project Developer’s manual refers to The Gold Standard Project Design Document for CDM Projects (GS-PDD) and to The Gold Standard Project Design Document for SmallScale CDM Projects (GS-SSC-PDD).This manual helps developers to complete the Gold Standard project design documents for both large- and small-scale projects. It provides guidance on the information that needs to be provided for successful validation and registration under the Gold Standard.
