GGGI Tonga Program Lead , Energy

This position is responsible for leading the energy sector analysis work for the GGGI Tonga country program. The Lead – Tonga Energy Program will be responsible for delivering energy sector analysis and supporting planning and policy development for the review of the Tonga Energy Road Map, the development of the LEDS and similar assignments, with a particular focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency and rural electrification.The position will lead several energy sector-related outputs within the Tonga country program, being responsible for technical analysis and outputs, while managing consultants and/or firms who may be engaged to support output delivery. S/he is the recognized lead advisor/focal point on a the energy theme for GGGI in Tonga and provides day to day technical/strategic advice internally as well as externally to ensure impactful delivery of relevant outputs under the program. The position plays a key role in driving dedicated ‘hybrid’ teams consisting of government offcials, GGGI staff and consultants in delivering top quality outputs which meet high technical standards in the most effective and efficient way. S/he monitors and evaluates the performance of team members as well as being a key point of technical advice and escalation for problem solving within the context of output delivery. S/he reports to the Pacific Regional Representative in Suva, Fiji.

Tonga became a member of GGGI in 2018. The Government of Tonga (GoT) makes clear its dedication to inclusive and sustainable growth in the Tonga Strategic Development Framework 2015-2025 (TSDF), which states that “we reaffirm the need to achieve sustainable development by promoting sustained, inclusive and equitable economic growth.” In 2019, GGGI is establishing an office in Tonga and is starting its technical assistance support to the Government by assisting in the review of the Tonga Energy Road Map (TERM) and development of the TERM Plus. The Government of Tonga has a target of 50% renewable electricity generation by 2020, and is looking to further increase this ambition as well as plan for low carbon development across the economy. In addition, GGGI and the Government of Tonga are investigating the development of the Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS) to 2050.
