A Feasibility Study For Biogas in Peri- Urban Area of Vaitele

This report was prepared by Murray Ward and Bill Rucks. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Renewable Energy Division, under the auspices of the Joint Water Sector Steering Committee (JWSSC), conducted this feasibility study on the production of biogas through anaerobic digestion from household sewage and green waste as an alternative method of on-site waste management that will improve sanitation while also providing a useful energy source for domestic household use in the Vaitele peri-urban area.

In recent years there has been increasingly compelling evidence that anthropogenic climate change not only threatens the biophysical environment but it also increases potential vulnerabilities of the people and the socio-economic structures and activities. Like many pacific island states, Samoa is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and as a non-Annex 1 country is taking steps toward implementing the agreed objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Poster - A Trial PV Mini-Grid for Small Islands

This poster was prepared by Herbert Wade, Edward Langham, Thomas Jensen, Bruce Clay and Joseph Walter. Apolima is a small island that is a part of Samoa, an island nation located in the central pacific. With current high fuel prices solar power is an economically reasonable alternative to diesel generation and the Apolima island installation is the first of many PV powered mini grid systems that are planned for the Anglophone Pacific Region.

Feasibility Study for the Production of Biogas and Organic Fertiliser in the Agriculture & Food Management Sectors in Samoa

This report was prepared by Murray Ward for the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. The use of biodigesters in Samoa and other Pacific Islands has so far been limited to just small demonstrations, mostly involving piggeries. However, Samoa has abundant potential feedstock resource for biodigesters, so the possibility to produce nationally significant amounts of bioenergy in distributed systems at farms, villages and in plantation estates.

National Consultant Report on Promotion of Environmentally Sustainable Transportation in the Pacific- Report on Samoa

This report was prepared by the South Pacific Geoscience Commission and focused on Samoa. Efficient and effective energy use in the transport sector is a measure of a country’s attainment of sustainable development. Samoa is totally dependent on imported fossil fuels for transport. This reliance on fossil fuels is likely to increase. This country report for Samoa is a ‘snapshot’ of the current situation regarding the transport sector.

Demand Side Management Project South Pacific Island States

The International Institute Energy Conservation (IIEC) prepared the Demand –Side Management (DSM) Program report for the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC). The Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funded a project titled “Support to the Pacific Islands Power Sector” (RAS/92/363) which was implemented through the Energy Division of the South Pacific Forum Secretariat (ForSec) from 1993 to 1996. Building regional capability in all aspects of Demand-side Management (DSM) program design and implementation was one of the key objectives of the project.
