PCREEE Supported ICAO’s Capacity Building Seminar on Low Emissions Aviation Measures

Monday, 28 May 2018

The Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) was represented by its Private Sector Expert (Mr Peceli Nakavulevu) in the recent International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) – UNDP – GEF Assistance Project “Capacity Building Seminar on Low Emissions Aviation Measures” where he contributed in presenting a paper on Renewable Energy Development in the region. The Seminar was held in Fiji on from 23– 24 May 2018.

The ICAO-UNDP-GEF initiative was intended to equip States with the guidance required to implement aviation environmental protectiozn activities, with a special focus on the needs of Small Island Developing States.

The Seminar provided an opportunity to note the remarkable developments that have taken place in aviation sector around the world with respect to low carbon emissions. The recent completion of the ICAO first solar project in Jamaica was a highlight of the seminar including the energy efficiency developments in airports around the world including those in Asia and Australia and finally the development of sustainable aviation fuels and the countries that have fully embarked on the initiative.

Mr Nakavulevu’s paper highlighted PCREEE’s effort to empower the private sector to take the lead and to invest in the transformation of the Pacific Islands to an energy system that is based on renewable energy and energy efficient technologies. PCREEE is currently conducting sustainable entrepreneurship workshops in the Pacific Island countries (PICs) and has recently launched a Sustainable Energy Business Development Facility to support emerging private sector businesses in the sustainable energy space.

The paper also highlighted the parallel energy efficiency initiatives of the Pacific Community’s Maritime and Ocean Programme. The Green Pacific Ports is assisting PICs to improve the environmental quality of the operations in Pacific ports, including waste management and energy efficiency. The IMO-supported Pacific Maritime Technical Cooperation Centre is supporting PICs to improve the energy efficiency of the maritime transport sector.

PCREEE is looking forward to working closely with ICAO and partners on its energy efficiency effort in the Pacific Islands.
